College Autism Support Series: Enhanced Social Integration

Social integration is a critical aspect of the college experience, and students with autism often face significant challenges in this area due to difficulties with social communication and interaction. Autism support services programs provide a structured environment where students can develop and practice essential social skills.

These programs offer various social skills training sessions, group activities, and workshops specifically designed for students with autism. Through these activities, students can build confidence in their social interactions and form meaningful relationships with their peers. Additionally, peer mentoring and facilitated social events help students feel more connected to their college community.

Enhanced social integration not only improves students’ social skills but also contributes to their overall well-being. Feeling connected and supported reduces feelings of isolation and anxiety, leading to better mental health outcomes. By fostering a sense of belonging, autism support services programs help students with autism enjoy a more fulfilling and enriching college experience.

At UT, doctoral clinicians work to provide opportunities for social integration for the students enrolled in the PASS Program; a program for degree-seeking students who are on the Autism Spectrum. Clinicians meet weekly to consult with the students and provide personalized guidance and support.

For more information about the PASS Program, please contact Dr. Carolyn Blondin, or contact the Center at 865-974-6177 or klass@utk.edu.
